Choosing Neurosurgery as my speciality was my long cherished dream and I was fortunate to be selected for the same at Aster mims Calicut I am ever thankful and proud to be trained under the excellent faculty led by Prof. Dr. Jacob. P. Alapatt. Neurosurgery Department at Aster mims has state of the art facilities like advanced microscope, Neuronavigation and Neuromonitoring . We also get good support from all other departments, especially Neurology, Neuroradiology, Neuropathology, Critical care, emergency medicine and Pulmonology.
All sorts of  challenging and  complicated cases are managed in the department and  I was given excellent exposure in  all of them including advanced ICU care, vascular and interventional procedures, functional  surgeries including DBS  and epilepsy, all types of cranial  and spinal cases. Regular academic programs, seminars, case presentations, Neuroradiology discussions are being conducted with participation from concerned departments. I am more than happy to write this review as an alumnus of this institution. I'm one of the many who joined this institution sceptical as the very first student of the Neurosurgery DrNB teaching programme.I definitely came with too many questions, moving to a new state and leaving behind my family in my home town, not knowing how it would work for me. But today, I can say with immense pride that I have been one of those lucky students to have been trained by men of illimitable knowledge, surgical skills, and a whale of patience.
Dr. Jacob Alapat, our HOD, was more than a father figure to me and my colleague Dr. Ronak. We would always look up to Dr. Noufal Basheer for his beautiful hand skills and composure, even when cases go haywire. Dr. Murali Krishnan, a mental giant, always updated us with what's new in Neurosurgery. Dr. Sreekumar and Dr. Jim made it a comfortable place to work and be around. Ample resources and support services provided by the DNB programme at MIMS Academy were of great help during my academic years. On the flip side, the Covid-19 pandemic brought in technical challenges and a crisis period, which was mindfully dealt with in the department and the institution. Overall, my academic, professional, and personal growth has been monumental, which definitely pushed my holistic well-being higher. I'm grateful for all the opportunities and experiences Aster MIMS has provided during my academic years, and now as an alumnus. Read less
