The DrNB programme in plastic and reconstructive surgery was stared in 2018 under the guidance of MIMS academy which currently has six batches of students. Our trainees are provided with extensive exposure to various types of surgeries, including aesthetic surgery, hand surgery, microvascular surgery, cleft lip and palate repair, onco and trauma reconstructive procedures, diabetic foot management, and burns management. They are allowed to assist and under supervision perform various surgical procedures during the course of the stay. They are also trained in post op care and rehabilitation. The students are also posted on rotation to allied specilaities including orthopaedics, General surgery, for their all-round development. The department holds weekly seminars, weekly theory examinations and case discussions as well as bedside discussions. Many national and international journals are made available for the use of students, the department holds subscriptions to ‘Recent advances in Plastic Surgery’, ‘Indian Journal of Plastic Surgery’ and Institute also holds a subscription of ‘Meditube- medical videos in General surgery’.

The Department is equipped with a separate spacious OPD, two dedicated operating rooms, one minor procedure room and day care room. The department also holds separate postgraduate room, seminar room with all audio-visual support and dedicated round the clock staff and medical personnel.

The Department runs ‘Smile train programme’ an international charity that supports 100% free cleft lip and cleft palate surgeries and comprehensive cleft care for children since 2017, where about 100 cases are done per year, to the date 3000 and counting cases of cleft lip and palate, Pharyngoplasty, cleft nose surgeries have been performed.
We are, also, one of the foremost centres in Microsurgery and trauma care centres in Kerala. To augment the surgical repair, a dedicated physiotherapy unit, a pain clinic and a full -fledged rehabilitation unit are available to ensure comprehensive patient care.
The department also undertakes paediatric cases including trauma and burns, diabetic foot management, vascular bypass procedures for extremities, allied with intervention radiology and cardiology departments.
Our Burns management unit is by far one of the best in Northern districts with the recently inaugurated skin bank, being the only one in Malabar region.
Our aesthetic surgery clinics ensure patient comfort and privacy and offer a range of procedure: LASER, day care procedures like, fillers, Botox, fat injections to major procedures like lipo-sculpting, mommy make-overs, abdominoplasty, liposuction for gynaecomastia, intimacy procedures and rejuvenation.
I am the first candidate who joined the department of Plastic Surgey in the year 2018.Joining the 6 year course was a huge risk to take.But from day 1 in the department i realized that it was a wise decision.The training and exposure we receive in this institution is commendable and irreplaceable.The variety and culmination of the case pool we have here is top class.
Hands on training is at its level best in our department.We have had very efficient and imminent faculties in the department who are wonderful surgeons whose main passion is teaching.
I dont think i have to ever look back again.The confidence to embark on any case without a second thought has been cultivated by my teachers in me.
The department was truely my second home and I will miss my family a lot .
